Sometimes leaving devices plugged in is not the best solution.

On the last trip I spent nearly all my time between two Federal Parks wherein the campgrounds only had outlets in the bathrooms. I did not want to have to either sit in a bathroom for several hours while my phone or battery charged or feel uncomfortable wondering if someone was walking off with it while I left it unattended. It also assumes no other campers will have the same idea and be vying for the outlet. In the Tim Hortons and Starbucks (which were quite busy in town) all available outlets were always in use. Same with the laundromat. Apparently, every other tourist wants to charge devices or use laptops too.

I did not want to have to plan parts of my day searching for locales and waiting while devices charged. I could use my panel at my campsite or on the bike so my power generation was a part of my otherwise routine. It would be different of course if one were using motels/hotels, hostels, B&B's etc... where plugging in is more secure and predictable.
