Cutting the hose isn't the hard part of shortening hydraulic lines. Inserting the new hose barb into the end of the hose can be a nightmare without the right tool. I've had to open up the end of the hose with an awl, heat it with a heat gun to soften it and bang in the new barb with a hammer, while holding the end of the hose in a vise.
