Whats this cadence thing you guys speak of?

1t steps is pretty overrated I think, obviously.
If I'm just tooling around with my wife then yes I totally agree. If I'm doing my own solo rides where I'm pushing myself at a tempo level of effort or whatever, I'll typically be at what is for me a very high cadence (like 85 minimum, typically 90-100), and I'll try to keep within that 90-95 or so range consistently. For that, 1t shifts are amazing. If I'm accelerating I like getting up to 97 or 98 rpm and shifting up and only dropping down to 90 or so. With a 2t shift it'll usually be back down to low 80s, and for a hard effort ride it kind of sucks to be dropping up and down between low 80s and upper 90s. I value my 1t shifts very highly, to the point where I choose (or cobble together if I have to) my cassettes specifically tailored for the rides I do, in order to preserve those close shifts.

But yeah, back in the old days when I rode a 5-speed bike and probably was riding around at like 65rpm and didn't know anything about cycling per se, I didn't know the difference, and wouldn't have cared. Times have changed. :-)
