In my city where most cyclists exist, speed limits are 35mph max. These streets vary from one lane each way to 3, even 4 lanes each way. We can't treat all the streets the same IMO.

On a busy 6-lane road (35mph limit) I will take the entire right lane IF i can maintain 20+mph. Otherwise, I am taking a less busy side street.

If the speed limit is over 35mph, or I am not feeling up to 20+ mph cycling, i will NOT hog a lane. I will take an alternate route or ride in the right tire track while keeping a sharp eye on my helmet mounted mirror.
