On a busy 6-lane road (35mph limit) I will take the entire right lane IF i can maintain 20+mph. Otherwise, I am taking a less busy side street.
If the speed limit is over 35mph, or I am not feeling up to 20+ mph cycling, i will NOT hog a lane. I will take an alternate route or ride in the right tire track while keeping a sharp eye on my helmet mounted mirror.
Makes sense, you adjust your bicycling technique to your current traffic environment and your own abilities/exertion level choice.
As an aside, what percentage of other cyclists (all cyclists, not just
enthusiasts) do you estimate feel up to maintaining a 20mph pace for any distance, especially in the midst of 35mph traffic?
