It is hard to say without knowing the actual width of the tire you have in mind and the spacing between the fork and stays. Actual tire dimensions vary from tire to tire, even though they may be marked with the same size.
I know this, so i mentioned, that i'm planning to use tires, that have effectively/actually 58mm/2.3" (measured with a caliper at the widest point). I hope someone has exactly this Trek model and will be able to check how much space is left with tires at certain width.
For example, one member will say that his 2.25 knobbies at 56mm actual width sit tight, and another will say that 52mm tire have some space to spare. This will be good starting point for me
