We had a pretty good spread. The meatballs, the mac and cheese, and the potato salad were nice and there were some fresh vegetables and dip. I'm bringing some cute little cannolis, some jelly donuts, and some pizza home. The highlight of the potluck had to be when one of the ladies looked at the platter of latkes with the sour cream and applesauce next to it and said "How wonderful! Somebody brought hash browns!"
I can top that. Being from New Orleans we eat ketchup with our latkes. I mean it IS fried potatoes.
Also I should warn you to be careful you are not caught in the same error as the lady you mentioned. Those jelly donuts you mentioned may well have been sufganiyot, the traditional Chanukah food in Israel corresponding to latkes here in the States. Even more likely if they were fried.
