Building my first bike
Hi everyone. I'm an experienced cyclist and can do most repairs and maintenance myself but I've never built up a bike until now.
I just bought a Brodie Tiber frameset. Steel frame, carbon fork and I'm going to slowly acquire the parts over the winter and build it up. My plan is to build a robust, do-everything bike that is primarily mid-distance oriented (as opposed to speed). My plan is to enter some randonneuring events and some light touring. By light touring, I'm thinking of long day rides and credit card touring. I own a full-on touring bike for multi-day tours.
The frame is designed for disc brakes only. I haven't worked on discs much so I'm looking for some advice.
Is there a standard for calipers and rotors? Do one manufacturer's calipers fit another manufacturer's rotors? Should I be buying them together as a kit? I have TRP Spyre brakes on my touring bike. If I wanted to be able to swap the wheels between the two bikes, should I be going with the same brakes on my new build?
Also, I find that a lot of disc ready wheelsets are advertised as cyclocross. Is there any reason a CX wheel shouldn't be used for a long distance road ride, assuming I have the right tires?
Finally, my experienced buddies are telling me to buy hydraulic brakes. I'm afraid of the extra maintenance and fluid contamination risk. I'm not one who likes to fuss with his gear on a daily basis. Is this a legit worry?
Thanks.
