Slightly different situation but fair warning:

I mounted undersized bars in this Cinelli 1a stem in 1975 (we were young and dumb back then). Rode it that way for years.

A while back switched the bars and stem to another bike and realized the bars were only 39cm wide.

When I spread the clamp to remove the old bars - PING! The front of the stem hit a high C as it sailed across my work bench.

@SJX426 mentioned: "I believe @Cityen du Monde was referring to the size difference between 3ttt stem/handlebars and Cinelli stem/handlebars. They are not considered compatible. If it works once, it may not work a second time. Al does not like to stretch or deform much...."

Most 3TTTbars were 26mm in the center. Classic Cinelli stems fit Cinelli 26.4mm bars. At some point in the 80's ??? Cinelli started making 26mm bars and stems too.
