I dunno, often times you can find these 80s mtbs at low prices much more easily than touring bikes. And when they come with double rack/fender brazons, and wide clearances for tires, why wouldn't you?

Edit: okay maybe it doesn't have double brazons, but still. It's an easy transition to touring with their given components, and there's no need to buy custom wheels since smaller wheels are naturally stronger.
