Shoes were the hardest item to find when I was getting ready to ride L'Eroica. Wore a pair of indoor soccer shoes for some of my training, then found a pair of Vittoria 1976 touring shoes on close out. While they have SPD mountains under a rubber cover, I rode them with no cleats on standard toe clip/ straps while I searched for a cleat solution.
The solution came as I was climbing up steep hill. I realized that the rubber sole was soft enough that it wasn't slipping out of the pedal. And the bonus was that With no cleats, walking was no longer a highwire act.
This combo worked fine for the event and is now my good weather set up. Other shoes that fit clipins are the wet weather set up as shoe covers plus clips equals cold feet.
