It's a moot point now because he no longer has the Mesa, but those tires were over 30 years old. They probably should have been replaced too.

It may have but the tires on it looked and still felt new. It was stored inside in a bag, so they didn't show any signs of dryrot. I liked the tread design, they had a solid center rib with knobs on the sides. They also were marked 65 psi, so they would likely roll nicely on pavement.
They weren't expensive tires, but I don't see that type of tire anymore.
Everything is narrower, with a kevlar bead for $35 or more.
