One thing worth mentioning though, is that both have 26" tires, which are getting hard to find. I have a 26" hardtail and recently bought a new rear tire at my lbs (they had only 1 tire to choose from in 26" !).

You are probably better off buying a decent hardtail in your budget range due to bobbing, and that a similarly priced hardtail will have better components on it. My buddy has an inexpensive motobecane full suspension bike (around 500 bucks) and I smoke him on a 1993 Specialized with no suspension when we ride. Take a look at the motobecane 529ht. For $400 you can have a nice hardtail with lockout fork, 29er tires which are easy to find, sram 24 speed drivetrain, and hydraulic disc brakes. That is pretty hard to beat for the price!

Thanks for the quick response Dave. I was actually originally looking at hardtail. I was talked out of it, a buddy convinced me a full suspension would be better for my back...
