Yep, went for a ride yesterday and the workaround seems to be doing the job. Had excellent shifting all around. The only problem is that the spindle doesn't extend all the way through the left crank arm. It is maybe 3 mm short, but maybe that is okay.
If you have just moved spacers from one side to the other, the spindle should be just like it was - unless there's some other problem. Did you tighten the preload screw - the one that is screwed into the left side of the axle, pushing the left crank up the axle splines? Were the pinch bolts on the left crank loose enough when you were doing that? As well as the little "key" thing that should be moved up when putting the crank in place?
One more question, just to make sure: with the original setup, the right FD limiter screw was all the way out and even moving the FD by hand (or pulling the cable by hand) didn't make it move far enough out?
As for chainline setup and measurement, it's not hard measuring it exactly. I've put it in writing, with some pics as best as I could here, if it helps:
