The relative ease of installation is improvement enough, IMO. I don't think there is any objective evidence that they have a shorter life than cartridge square tapers. Even if they did, they are cheap and so easy to replace, even by the ham fisted. From a practical standpoint, it's what there is in mid to upper range Shimano. No reason to avoid it.
