Square taper is really good. Those old sealed cartridge BBs would last decades with zero maintenance. However, square taper was heavy and removing the cranks could be a pain if they seized. Very minor issues, admittedly.

I think Hollowtech II is the best BB system there is, bar none. SRAM, RaceFace, Sammox etc, all have copied it for good reason. Every bike I own (six of them) is Hollowtech II or similar. HTII is inexpensive, it takes no time to install with cheap tools, it's extremely reliable and it never creaks.

I'm mystified by the "new tech" question. Isn't Hollowtech II at least 10+ years old? Pretty much only inexpensive steel track bikes and fixies come with square taper these days.
