I've tried them twice on roadside repairs. Both happened (thankfully) on warm sunny summer days a couple of years ago... Both failed before I completed the rides. I've since read that you'll have better results if you really scuff-up the tube, peel the backing off the patch and briefly (2 or 3 seconds) light the sticky side on fire and then really press and hold the patch in place for a minute or two. I haven't tried this yet. These were Park Tools GP2 pre-glued patches. Because the patch kit was so small I really wanted it to work. I didn't have any luck. YRMV (try lighting them up!)
Now I just bring an extra tube along with a regular Rema (glue) patch kit.
Haven't had to walk home since!

When you say light the sticky side I'm guessing you mean that literally i.e. a lighter to get it seriously warm???
The guy in the shop ..... he said scuff the tyre up well (it includes something to do it with) and he reckoned it'd deal with quite a reasonable size hole ... maybe some makes are better than others**********????
