With aluminum parts you need to know whether or not the aluminum is anodized. Often what looks like a plain silver part will be anodized aluminum and polishing compounds can wear that anodized layer away. Once you have one bare spot you're committed to taking it all down and the part may end up looking nicer but will require more upkeep than it previously did.
