I’ve tried this with two frames (both with a flat edge on the front of the lug, as merziac mentioned is needed) and both gave me a simple reading with no trouble. I already had seat posts for these frames so I happen to know it gave me the correct answer. I’ve never had any success trying to do this with calipers.
