Crank arm is commonly used instead of just "crank" - which is an arm by definition.
Same goes for "crankset", instead of just "cranks" - especially since it only and always refers to just one "set of cranks", even on tandem bikes.
Just two examples off the top of my head.
That's true, words and terms do sometimes mutate to be longer as well. George Carlin had a great bit on that.
