My experience with studly tires is just that, pressure makes a ton of difference. When conditions are marginal I pump them up to 60 and they run on the unstudded tire center. If it's really icy I drop them to 45-50, flattens out the tire and more studs are in contact.
Today was one of those 'pump em up days.' Colder than yesterday at 29F and the moderate thawing from yesterday afternoon refroze all standing water. But it's supposed to be upper 30's this afternoon and 50's tomorrow. Looking forward to swapping back to regular tires!
