Not really age-related. It's probably just DOMs which hits anyone who hasn't done that sort of thing in a while.
I climb a lot of stairs ... but if I haven't done it in a while, when I do just 10 flights my calves will ache the next day.
If you were to hike regularly, you'd probably be fine.
