living in n iowa we have had some serious cold so far. wind chills to -30. i have commuted 2.5 miles every day for almost 25 years. nokian tires, m and g, 160, on my 26 mtn. bk. for me it is a layering. merino wool, 2 layers when it is that cold, a patagonia r4 jacket, followed with a patagonia wind breaker over that. my head has a balaclava, wool stocking had, then the hood of the patagonia wind jacket, if it is windy.
warm mittens, merino wool long undies, and craft storm pants over that. they don't make the storm pants anymore, nice piece of gear that i have had for 15 years.
2 pair of wool socks, one thin, one thicker, and insulated boots. no clips in the winter.
i have stayed warm, and get to work with very little sweat. a good layering job.
when it warms up, of course i use patagonia pullover jackets, with less clothes.
rain is another story, even with pit zips, moisture stays in. i just deal with it.
love the winter commutes, bike trail most of the way that even gets plowed. although i see very few in the harsh conditions.
