Yeah, that's what I've been doing. I just got a 12-30 cassette for my road bike (it is a non-compact Ultegra crank) but I'll probably go compact soon. Penetrex sounds intriguing as well.

I always mashed pretty big gears and I think that's definitely a culprit. I have also quit running as that is the only time it hurts like hell. Thanks for the input!
