All you have to do (after setting the hub in the gear with least cable tension) is pull the cable housing out of its seat in the cassette joint and slide the wire through the slot. No need to rotate the shift mechanism at all. Easy! (It took me a few years to figure this out though.)

Huh. Steve, you're right! I just now gave it a try. How on earth have I missed seeing that? I've been doing both -- pulling out the housing and also turning back the hub interface. You've made my future tire swaps a lot easier.
