These set up methods apply to double hex wrench fitted bolts too. So if these are the problems you're having then a mere change of the tool fit won't be the solution.
I would suggest to stay away from AL ring bolts in general, especially if the OEM bolts are problematic. Andy
BTW if you came into Full Moon Vista and asked to go through our bag of take off bolts we'd sell you a set for pocket change, not $25. Which even for new is extremely expensive. We sell chrome new sets at $10. Andy
This is in regards to my single-speed bike. The chainring bolts in question are original equipment on a bike I bought new and fully assembled. It's not a Walmart bike or otherwise cheapo bike.
The chainring bolts have worked their way loose from time to time. I have a torque wrench and a Park Tool slotted bolt head tool. It's extremely difficult to hold that slotted head with said tool and get the bolts torqued to spec while everything is on the bike. Maybe I should take the DS side of the crank and work on it while placed flat on my work bench. BTW, my shop instructor said the tool I mentioned is the "worst tool in the world". I happen to agree.
Thanks for your help.
