I go through about 2 sets of cleats per year. Not because I ride so much, but because being above average in athletic ability I walk around quite a bit in my cleated shoes and that wears them down quickly.
You sound like a candidate for Kool Kovers, the rubber covers that slip over the cleats, saving them a lot of wear and also making your shoes far more secure to walk in. (Although with your "above average in athletic ability", maybe walking on ice-like surfaces is good. ) I wear mine (the Delta version) any time I am off the bike and hang them from one of REI's cheap key-ring carabiners on my tool bag. I resisted doing something that dorky looking and put them in my jersey pocket until I finally got tired of filthy jerseys. Now, dorky works, I have long lasting cleats and my tailbone doesn't live in fear.
