it came off with half of the remaining thread , the extractor ring stripped off the outer half..

the real solution don't use a self extractor ring gimmick, , but instead use a proper crank arm extractor shop tool..

how often to you need to take your crank arms off in the field, anyhow?

I put on a different crank standard bolt & dust cap..
Sounds identical to what happens when you don't tighten an extractor tool down. You checked that the extractor ring was tight, of course...
