Got my old steel Specialized MTB single speed conversion project on the road today. Here are some observations.
My front wheel isn't true. It wasn't true before the conversion either. I just noticed it again today. The front brake gyrates side to side when I brake.
I want some grips on the handlebars. There weren't any at the LBS that jumped out at me.
The Surly Torsion bar and old road bike GB stem are my favorite part of the bike.
I'm not digging the Selle Itallia racing style seat. It came with my new geared bike which now sports my favorite seat. The Selle Itallia looks like woven carbon fiber graphite. I had high hopes because it looks expensive and won't be bothered sitting in the rain. I'll give it a few weeks. It just seems skinny and I was sliding around on it some. I wasn't sore when I was done riding, so maybe there is hope.
I'm pleased with the 35x16 gear ratio. Don't know what I was smoking when I originally ordered a 35x22 drive train. Maybe when the snow piles up I'll be wanting a low gear.
My horizontal dropouts are short. The 35x22 gear set didn't allow a chain length that fit. My optimal configurations are 35x16 or 35x20. The dropouts have a round hole behind them. It looks like I could file out the bridge between the dropouts and the hole to get bigger dropouts. There is still a large amount of steel behind the hole. I'm not planning to do this, but have noted the possibility for future consideration.
I don't like the Dimension (Wellgo) cruiser pedals as well as my old plastic Wellgo platforms. The old plastic ones have short plastic spikes that my hiking shoe treads grab hold of. The new cruiser pedals have a rubber platform that my shoes don't grip as well. Also, the dust caps don't stay in the new pedals. They immediately fell out on the workbench. I couldn't get them to stay in so they stayed on the workbench.
