Q really doesn't take into account the thickness of the crank arm itself but yeah, I get what you are saying and this is what I was planning on doing.

SRAM actually makes this easy. They publish dimensional drawings of every part they make for frame and component manufacturer's reference. The link below is one of several documents they produce yearly and is typical. They have one which shows the Omniums.
