The PW-5 is strong enough for any reasonable pedal removal but if you get one badly corroded in place it can be really difficult. If you expect to run into a lot of very difficult uber-tight pedals, get a Park PW-4.
Great suggestions, all and fair question(s) for sure - turn it the right way - (I'm sure we've all turned a bolt/nut the wrong way at some point, I know I have) but alas, not this time. But no worries, the actual problem is solved, I threw a standard 15mm open box wrench and cheater bar on it and it turned right off. I guess I was just a little frustrated after the Park wrench successfully removed the drive-side pedal.

In retrospect, I really enjoy wrenching on my own bike - it's so much cleaner and cathartic than any other maintenance/construction I've done, the simplicity is beautiful as is the machining. I guess a broken wrench represented an affront to that - funny how inanimate objects can take on philosophical personalities. Thanks for listening. Time to go ride!
