Amazon took the mushed wrench back (even covered shipping for the return) and I replaced the Park pw-5 with a pw-3 which does seem more robust. And yeah, I'm not sure the old pedals - this is an early '70's Nishiki - had ever been replaced/removed. New pedals will be grease-fitted and hand tightened. Thanks for all the responses and great advice.
