It may come to asking Garmin, but communicating with a company that size is never easy. Maybe they answer email, maybe not. Or you spend hours on hold. I'm still hoping for an answer here.
I have called Garmin several times over the past few years. I've frequently gotten what I needed from the first person who answered, they follow up with email, and they have a good replacement program for out of warranty units (around $80-100 for a refurbished unit). They've even worked with me and let a new unit and my old unit cross in teh mail for a warranty issue.
