Possibly, but OTOH may actually save money.

It takes less than $1.00 worth of a decent (bike specific) lube to do the job. If it does it's job, and has a reasonable service interval, the lube will pay for itself in improved chain life.

A decent lube made for the job, may also save the rider time and that too has a value.

In any case "unproven" and "exotic" are terms that show the writers bias. The proof is in the results, and given that the cost is very low compared to what folks spend on bikes, riders can determine for themselves if a product warrants the cost.
