I know what you are talking about regarding Hans Ohrt.
I grew up in west Los Angeles, took up serious cycling as a UCLA undergrad, and worked at Bikecology (Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Marina Del Rey) as a grad student. There were several famous, or at least noted, shops in the area. I do not know of any that have survived into the current century, but maybe some who still lives in the area can correct me.
