Hey, I hope you're not including me in the "you guys" reference. Bruce is out in left field on this as far as I'm concerned, especially when I ride on sidewalks and in crosswalks as a "rolling pedestrian". Even Forester writes about sidewalk cycling, which implies the inclusion of crosswalk cycling. But his book is about
effective cycling, with a specific meaning of
effective: safe, enjoyable and relatively efficient (paraphrasing). From his perspective, side/cross walk cycling is a tinymostly irrelevant aspect of that subject, and he choose to focus on cycling on roads in the according to the vrotr. I don't see how you could seriously argue with that. Of course there are exceptions (my mom, for example, a lifelong non-driver who cycles on empty sidewalks (no driveways), slowly, but does walk across crosswalks, to do some shopping about a mile from her home), but my mom is not the type of cyclist for whom his book is intended.
They're called sidewalks and crosswalks, by the way, because the
primary purpose is as facilities for walking, but that does not necessarily exclude cycling (though of course it does in some jurisdictions).
