I am not sure when that 30 years took place. Even my Dad
who took up smoking during WW2 knew it's health risks at the time. And since the heath (heart/lung) of kerosene lanterns was of great concern before electric became commonplace.... people tended to overlook many health risks rather than worry about circumstances they had no control of.
I also don't recall the tobacco lobby "battle" either. Sure.... some politicians with large numbers of voting constituents working in the tobacco industry (and a willingness to accept political contributions) did remind congress of their supposed limited powers. But
NEVER to any avail. It was great political theater.... but acting... is NOT "battling".
It all boiled down to do Americans have a "right" to do stupid and harmful things. For many... the answer was
NO. I don't smoke, drink, do drugs, or much of any other harmful vice....
with the exception of cycling. But many... would quickly remove us cyclist from the roadways.... with the same reasoning that removed tobacco products.
