same here, never a problem with boxes. 50+ flights.
doesn't address OP, but oh well.

rear wheel/rack/fenders/derailler stay on.
add some computer cpu packing foam to pad the derailler zone.

front wheel off, skewer stays in fork w/100mm pvc pipe.
bike shipping plastic thingie covers non-disc end of hub against the box.
wrap flexible foam stuff around the disc, secure with zip tie.
disc goes inside the frame after removing the water bottle cages.
wheel zip tied to the frame.
