They are called Nor'Easters, and they do not come from the northeast. The lows that feed them typically come from the southwest and move in a northeasterly direction. Winds come out of the northeast in a counterclockwise direction. Before technology, that made it seem to people on the ground that the storm was moving out of the northeast.
