You could fight it all the way or find the beauty in it.
A similar ritual can be had with glue - but it involves a helper. I've had complete strangers (racers, so not really complete) as for help in putting the glued number on. You chit chat a bit, ask what race, where they are from. No number on me of course but I've seen the number gluing reciprocated.
