You "might" be able to screw in the L screw a tiny bit and then take up the cable slack generated.

Shift to the middle ring to take pressure off the screw.
Screw in 1/4T.
Check to make sure it'll shift to the mall ring. If it won't, you'll have to back out the L screw and you're back where you started.
If it does, adjust the cable tension & test.

I usually set the L so that it just barely drops the chain to the small ring reliably +1/8T out.
