Yup, that's how I've done it on several bikes. This is the right way to do it if you don't want to break your shifter. LOL on the slack cable being a danger, gotta love the internet OSHA inspectors
You're comparing the "danger" of breaking a shifter by using it the way it was designed vs. the "danger" of getting the housing stuck half out of stop.
Seems like both are at about the same level of concern.
