I'm the same demo as you and can do #2. Can't flat foot it but can comfortably be on the balls with heel lifted the height of my hand flat on the floor (0.75"ish). The Atlantic article says a small heel helps, and I think that would make it perfect for me.
Also the kind of flexibility required to do an overhead squat--a very difficult movement. Watch Olympic lifters do the snatch and you'll see.
