I just took it to a bike shop. I know the guy in there has owned a couple of Chilterns in the past as I have been in once before. You are right it was well due a service and he did one side of the bottom bracket there and then and I'm going to take it back and get the other side done when he finds a part for it.

The cotter came out OK! He said a little prayer before tackling it and luckily God heard him! He was mightily relieved when it dropped out.
