True story. Way back when I was, maybe 13-14 and in Boy Scouts, we had a Scoutmaster that was a bit of a jerk. At the end of every campout, he would come to our campsite and stick his hands all in the fire pit/ashes/coals to make sure everything was cool. He wanted it to be wet and always made a big scene of stirring up that mush of wet ashes and coals with his bare hands. Once he came to our extinguished fire and did his usual ritual and loudly declared we had not done a sufficient job of extinguishing our campfire. Then he berated us and and harshly scolded us, vowing to return in 5 minutes and it better, by gosh, be COLD and WET!!!
Well, no one really wanted to tote water from the creek nor empty our canteens. So we did what any reasonable young male would do and "extinguished" the fire by emptying our "water" into the ashes and coals. Sure enough he returned as he had vowed, and buried his hands up to his wrists, stirring and turning the ashes and dead coals. Of course in spite of our giggling, we held it together as best we could but I believe he suspected what had transpired when he stood up suddenly, mumbling about NOW it was extinguished and hurried off quickly toward his campsite.
