my take on this whole thing is that all the advancements have made old 8 speed stuff real cheap. i now can run half step and triple with a 12-34 cassette with 24-38-41 crankset on a gossamer crankset. the cassette costs <20.00 and the crank was almost free at the co-op. its a wonderful time to tinker with your bike.
