Two things in a bike shop are never good news: a lot of banging and a red face. With a proper cotter press, there's no need for either, nor for any luck or divine intervention.

I would never pay someone to bang on my crank cotters; banging on crank cotters is for do-it-yourselfers, not professional mechanics. If a shop or mechanic doesn't have the proper tool for the job, I'd very highly recommend finding a shop that does.
