I would not have been able to remain calm after that.

I understand accidents happen. It's why they are accidents. No one MEANS to almost run you over. But if someone was putting my life at risk to send a text message I would not have reacted in a calm and mature manner. I'd have lost my cool.

I got rear ended in my car last year by a texting driver. I have no patience for willful stupidity. Mistakes happen, but texting while driving is basically welcoming an accident.
