If it's miles from the trailhead I assume once it's lugged in by a shelter maintenance volunteer, nobody's going to carry it out, and only very dedicated hikers will encounter it, so hopefully trail etiquette will work to keep it operational. I mean if the pump works, it means vandals didn't take the handle.
Wishful thinking. But it is good to know someone that is so trusting.
