Bikes: Too many. Giant Trance X 29, Surly Midnight Special get the most time.

What kind of riding do you do? Have you had any problems with your previous wheels?

For actual racing the deepest carbon wheels that handle reliably for you will be faster in almost any scenario. Carbon wheels vary meaningfully in brake track performance for rim brakes and the best offer better drag numbers for their given depth with better crosswind stability.

For general road riding nice aluminum road wheels will always brake well in both wet and dry conditions (though some current carbon designs brake very, very well). They can be significantly lighter than the wheels mentioned with less proprietary parts and better hub reliability with few downsides besides cost.

I'd primarily encourage you to seek out an experienced wheelbuilder in your area, but if you're buying prebuilt I have generally positive opinions of most Shimano wheelsets, though some have proprietary nipples and spokes, but they're all hand built and the hubs are of good quality. I like Easton road wheels for their build quality and very high spoke tensions.
